UPDATE : Athletes' chiseled bodies caught in poses that replicate their most athletic moves can be found once again in The Body Issue. There is plenty of behind-the-scenes video of the photo shoots and interviews with the stars that took it all off. Videos posted below.
Hope Solo is this year's cover girl and she is heard in the video saying that she is "honored to have the opportunity to celebrate not just the athlete's body but the female athlete's body." Her fans will surely agree with that.
Solo admitted to getting the pre-photoshoot jitters sitting in the makeup chair while she pondered if she was peaking too early in her emotional preparation, for what she admits was a bit intimidating to her.
A world-class athlete and international star after her performance for the U.S women's national soccer team in the recently completed World Cup matches, Solo says that she is fearful of not meeting the expectations of readers when they see her body without clothes.
She actually performed a few abdominal crunches to tighten up while in the fluffy white robe that was tossed away when she faced photographers.
In the case of professional snowboarder Gretchen Bleiler, posing nude with only a snowboard strategically placed in front of private parts that a family magazine will not allow to be shown, there was no time for second thoughts.
"It just gets more and more comfortable, especially on a day like today. It was 'nuking' out there and I felt bad for everyone else out there that had clothes on." Bleiler was shot on the roof of Hollywood's iconic hotel, the Chateau Marmont on a hot day in Southern California.
How does she like being asked to pose for The Body Issue? "It's a huge honor to be grouped in with the most amazing and skilled athletes in the world."
Then there's NBA sensation, Blake Griffin. He used to wait for the annual issue as a reader and never hesitated for a moment when he was asked to participate in the 2011 edition.
"Obviously it's the first time I've taken pictures without clothes on. It was different but, everybody was cool. I was just concentrating on holding a pose, and getting them the right angle. I thought they turned out great."
The N.Y. Mets shortstop Jose Reyes recently engaged in a controversial act when he took himself out of the final game of the year to preserve his National League-best batting average. The nude photo shoot was a just bit more difficult for him, however.
"Naked? I told my agent to give me one day to think about it. I didn't know how many people were going to be in the room. I was a little nervous. Then I said, 'why not?' " As he was being attended to by a manicurist before the shoot, sitting in a chair with just a white towel draped over his lap, he playfully told the woman, "You better make me look good."
Among other athletes who agreed to be featured in this year's Body Issue are race car driver Helio Castroneves, speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno and gymnast Alicia Sacramone. For the entire gallery of pro athletes' in all their glory, click here.
